A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY
THE 100TH Infantry Battalion, aka “The Purple Heart Battalion” was a WWII unit made up predominantly of Americans of Japanese ancestry (AJAs) from Hawaiʻi who were on active duty in when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. Along with the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team, they become known as “The Hawaiians” in Europe.
The 100thʻs performance during training led to the formation of the 442nd RCT, a larger unit of Japanese American (AJA) soldiers composed of individuals from curfewed Hawaiʻi residents (58%) and detainees from U.S. incarceration camps (38%).
In the first four months of southern Italy combat, culminating in the Battle of Monte Cassino, the 100th suffered a two-thirds casualty loss, thus dubbed “The Purple Heart Battalion” by war correspondents. After Cassino, replacements from Camp Shelby 442nd 1st BN trainees start being called up to join the 100th for Anzio, the final battle of the Foggia to Rome Campaign.
During the next Rome to Arno Campaign, the 442nd RCT (except for the 1st BN which remained at Camp Shelby) was deployed, initially fighting side-by-side with the 100th. Later, the 100th would be re-designated as the first battalion of the 442nd. Due its exemplary performance, the 100th was allowed a rare exception to retain its “100th BN” name. The combined 100th/442nd RCT—including the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion which later detached to fight in Germany—fought many of the epic battles through Italy and France including Hill 140 “Little Cassino,” Bruyères, Biffontaine, The Lost Texas Battalion Rescue and Monte Folgorito to become one of the most highly decorated units in U.S. military history.
But this isn’t just a tale of war – it’s a story of Nisei (second generation AJA) soldiers who raised the bars on heroism and valor through applying the Spirit of Aloha, both during the War and for 80 years after in the building of a free world.

#100thfilm
While doing some research for THE 100TH, Seeds of Aloha, we came across a TV show called Gallant Men with a 1963 episode entitled “One Puka Puka.” The episode features Big Island born Poncie Ponce (Hawaiian Eye) playing Lt. Joe O’Hara and Honolulu born Frank Atienza (Blue Hawaii, Star Trek) playing Cowboy in the 100th INF BN (SEP), WWII. Lt. O’Hara thanks Cowboy for saving him from being killed by a German soldier and Cowboy throws a 🤙 shakey Shaka 🤙 back, consistent with his real life Honolulu upbringing.
In our previous film, SHAKA, A Story of Aloha, the earliest recorded Shaka we found was Elvis Presley’s 1973 Aloha from Hawaii “Hana Hou” Shaka 🤙 thrown during the first global satellite broadcast ever.
This one predates Elvis’ by a decade. More importantly, it’s thrown before Lippy Espinda’s early 1970s use in his TV show and/or used car sales ads.
You go Cowboy!!!🤠 🤙 #shaka #aloha #100thfilm
