A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

The 100th Infantry Battalion, known as the “Purple Heart Battalion,” was formed from Americans of Japanese ancestry (AJAs) from Hawaiʻi who were serving in the U.S. military when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Despite their loyalty being questioned, they chose to fight for a country that doubted them.

Their extraordinary performance led to formation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, predominantly composed of AJAs, with most coming from Hawaiʻi and others serving as volunteers and draftees from the continental United States—many with families incarcerated by their own government. Together, the 100th/442nd fought across Italy and France, while the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion later detached and advanced into Germany. The 100th/442nd RCT became one of the most decorated units in U.S. military history.

But THE 100TH, Seeds of Aloha is not simply a story about war.

These men stood at the center of an extraordinary contradiction: America fought tyranny abroad while struggling with racism and prejudice at home. Their story reminds us that a country can fall short of its ideals while its people still choose to embody them.

Known in Europe as “The Hawaiians,” the 100th/442nd RCT carried the spirit of aloha through war—and then brought it home. For the next 80 years, veterans and the generations they inspired became educators, community leaders, judges and elected officials. Some became part of the very government that had once doubted them, choosing not to abandon the system, but to help improve it.

Those are the Seeds of Aloha: courage and humanity planted during war, then cultivated through eight decades of service helping build a freer world.

What survives war?

What do we do when our country falls short of the ideals we still believe in?

The 100th/442nd offers an extraordinary answer: embody those ideals—and work to make them real.

Happy July 4th, America250! ID8 was proud to spend the afternoon doing a test screening of THE 100TH, Seeds of Aloha with Arcadia Seniors. Opened by Rev David Turner, grandson of Col. Farrant Turner, first CEO of the 100th in WWII, starring Col. Walter Ozawa, post WWII 100th CO and Arcadia resident, and Q/A by producers Steve Sue and Alexander Bocchieri, it was a really memorable remembrance of the valor and sacrifices the 100th/442nd made toward the making of today’s free world. #proudtobeanamerican #100thfilm

While doing some research for THE 100TH, Seeds of Aloha, we came across a TV show called Gallant Men with a 1963 episode entitled “One Puka Puka.” The episode features Big Island born Poncie Ponce (Hawaiian Eye) playing Lt. Joe O’Hara and Honolulu born Frank Atienza (Blue Hawaii, Star Trek) playing Cowboy in the 100th INF BN (SEP), WWII. Lt. O’Hara thanks Cowboy for saving him from being killed by a German soldier and Cowboy throws a 🤙 shakey Shaka 🤙 back, consistent with his real life Honolulu upbringing.

In our previous film, SHAKA, A Story of Aloha, the earliest recorded Shaka we found was Elvis Presley’s 1973 Aloha from Hawaii “Hana Hou” Shaka 🤙 thrown during the first global satellite broadcast ever.

This one predates Elvis’ by a decade. More importantly, it’s thrown before Lippy Espinda’s early 1970s use in his TV show and/or used car sales ads.

You go Cowboy!!!🤠 🤙 #shaka #aloha #100thfilm
